Director of Operations

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (Vineland) is recruiting for a Director of Operations to work in an industry-driven research environment.  Vineland is a world-class research centre dedicated to horticultural science and innovation. Located in Canada’s Niagara Region, on the traditional territory of Anishinaabeg, Ojibway/Chippewa and Haudenosaunee peoples, this territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties.

Duties & Responsibilities

Reporting to the CEO, the Director of Operations is responsible for Vineland’s operations, health and safety and facilities (buildings, greenhouses and farms).

As a member of the Senior Management Team, you will:

  • Support the development, implementation and evaluation of organizational strategy, risk management and decision-making
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction in operations and facilities by:
    • Serving as principal operations liaison with the Agricultural Research Institute of Ontario and the Government of Ontario
    • Managing all Vineland physical operations including lease agreements
    • Working with and supporting Vineland’s Vice President Research and Development to ensure effective planning, use and maintenance of research infrastructure
    • Providing oversight of all capital expansion projects, as well as routine capital, to ensure appropriate maintenance of facilities
    • Administering the operations team annual operating budget
  • Provide strategic leadership to the Managers for the development and execution of comprehensive building, greenhouse and farm operations plans to obtain maximum effectiveness and efficiency of operations
  • Secure and maintain appropriate insurance for all assets and operations, including professional insurance for Vineland and Board members
  • Provide overall responsibility for the organization’s integrated systems and information technology infrastructure
  • Provide strategic leadership and direction of corporate health and safety including the development, implementation and enhancement of Vineland’s Health, Safety & Environment (HS&E) management system


  • Advanced degree (i.e. MBA) and a minimum of ten years of executive experience (preferably in the not-for-profit and/or research sector). An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of five years of senior manager experience in health, safety and environment leadership
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with core values centered on a participative communication style with a high degree of transparency and leading by example through walking around and communicating with all levels of the organization effectively
  • Demonstrated experience with a commitment to building leadership capacity
  • Evidence of well-developed strategic thinking and project management skills in a deadline-driven environment where multi-tasking and prioritizing are constantly required
  • Excellent communication skills (written, oral and interpersonal) combined with outstanding human relations, team building and organizational skills
  • Advanced skills and experience including project management, self-motivation, goal accomplishment and work prioritization
