Engineer, Computer Vision

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (Vineland) is recruiting for an Engineer, Computer Vision (contract position until March 31, 2022) to work in an industry-driven research environment. Duties & Responsibilities

Responsibilities

Science/Engineering – 80%

  • Research, develop and prototype advanced hardware and software vision technologies
  • Develop 2D and 3D image acquisition and image processing algorithms
  • Design and implement algorithms to control and calibrate cameras and sensors
  • Develop real-time algorithms that use vision data to support decision making
  • Develop high-quality computer vision algorithms for localization, object detection, and classification
  • Develop robust software for integrating multiple cameras and sensors
  • Take part in system design review sessions
  • Support the team in establishing a state-of-the-art robotics and automation lab
  • Design and apply machine learning algorithms and evaluate their performance
  • Translate algorithms into production-level code
  • Integrate existing software practices that produce maintainable code, including automated testing, continuous integration, code style conformity, and code review
  • Produce high-quality code that enables large scale research and can be transferred to physical robots deployed in the real world
  • Stay up to date on the state-of-the-art in computer vision techniques and software in collaboration with our team members
  • Work in a multidisciplinary team and collaborate with other teams across the organization. This position reports to the Research Scientist, Field Robotics

Non-technical – 20%

  • Communicate results to colleagues, management and external stakeholders
  • Administer and adhere to organizational processes and policies
  • Interface with the director, scientists, business staff and/or senior management to develop R&D plans, proposals, intellectual property filings, commercialization strategies and other material that facilitate the innovation process
  • Prepare reports, proposals, plans and presentations for internal and external audiences

    

Qualifications

Qualifications and Competencies

  • Eng/B.E.Sc in Computer or Electrical Engineering, or B.Sc in Computer Science, or relevant field
  • Strong understanding of the fundamentals of computer science and computer vision
  • 2+ years of work/research experience with classical computer vision and machine learning
  • Experience applying computer vision solutions for applications with robotics
  • Advanced knowledge and experience in working with various imaging and 3D sensing devices
  • Solid knowledge and experience with 2D and 3D image processing algorithms
  • Reliable programming skills in Python, C++, and MATLAB
  • Experience using libraries such as OpenCV, PCL, Torch, etc.
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Have an excellent sense of professionalism
  • Strong organization, time management, and communication skills

Desired qualifications:

  • Eng, M.E.Sc, or M.A.Sc education
  • Experience with agriculture or horticulture
  • Experience with mobile robotics and robotic manipulators
  • Ability to contribute to business development efforts
  • Experience with programming in a Linux environment
  • Experience with ROS
  • Experience with GPU programming language CUDA/OpenCL
  • Experience with deploying vision systems for real-time applications
  • GitHub open source project experience
  • Familiarity with MATLAB
  • Experience writing papers and contributing to research proposals
