Research Technician, Mechatronics – Systems Integration, Robotics & Automation

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (Vineland) is recruiting for a Research Technician – Mechatronics, Systems Integration to work in an industry-driven research environment.  Vineland is a world-class research centre dedicated to horticultural science and innovation. The term of employment for this contract position is November 1, 2021 to December 31, 2023.

Duties & Responsibilities

Reporting to the Senior Research Engineer – Systems Integration, the Research Technician – Mechatronics has a key role within the Systems Integration team in developing, coordinating, manufacturing and testing automated and robotics prototype systems that Vineland develops for the horticultural sector. The position works with a dynamic, multidisciplinary group solving real-world horticultural problems.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

Design (approx. 50%)

  • Design multidisciplinary engineering solutions
  • Design mechanical solutions utilizing CAD software
  • Contribute to system-level designs
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge in industry-related developments and innovations

Lab & Field Hands-on (approx. 35%)

  • Manufacture, test and deploy, multidisciplinary engineering solutions
  • Manufacture mechanical systems utilizing in-house prototyping machinery (3D printing, CNC, etc.) or via management of outsourced fabrication
  • Assemble and deploy mechatronic systems for testing and validation
  • Test and validate prototype systems in both lab and field settings (greenhouse, farm, etc.)

CNC Machining (10%)

  • Set-up and manage CNC machines to perform different jobs including drilling, grinding and milling
  • Translate engineering drawings and requirements into dimensions for production
  • Ensure the CNC machine operates in accordance with the guidelines of the company
  • Record all machine actions by completing production and quality logs
  • Conduct regular CNC machine assessments

Project Management (approx. 5%)

  • Ensure that critical project work has been verified at key milestones by facilitating design review mechanisms
  • Assist in the development of project related documentation (proposals, test reports, etc.)
  • Manage and coordinate maintenance and upkeep for Automation lab space and equipment

Qualifications

QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES

  • Engineering Technologist or Technician, Mechanical or Mechatronics (C.Tech, C.E.T)
  • 2-3 years’ experience in a manufacturing or similar environment
  • Solidworks CAD/CAM.
  • Rapid prototyping (CNC, 3D printing, etc.).
  • Managing outsourced fabrication.
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Strong organization, time management, and communication skills

Preferred Additional Qualifications:

  • Experience with Haas TM-1P CNC
  • Experience with agriculture or horticulture
  • Experience with mobile robotics and robotic manipulators
