Senior Advisor – Business Development

Duties & Responsibilities

The Senior Advisor, Business Development provides business leadership to Vineland research programs in their dealings with external clients and collaborators. Reporting to the Vice President, Business & Client Development, the Senior Advisor identifies and builds new business opportunities to sell the full breadth of Vineland’s technical services and research capabilities. This position partners with Vineland’s research teams to direct and enhance their capacity to attract and retain clients, collaborators and commercialization partners. The incumbent is accountable for managing client relationships and securing revenue at a level appropriate to support Vineland’s core research programs.

The Business Development team at Vineland is highly integrated in the organization’s research programs, providing support in the areas of commercialization strategy, intellectual property management, partnerships, licensing and agreements. The successful candidate will seek out and develop new commercial partnerships with companies interested in bringing Vineland technologies to market. This role will also provide on-going support to Vineland’s licensees to ensure that they are successful in getting products to market and creating impact.

This role will be required to understand, in detail, a number of industry sectors and communicate relevant information to Vineland staff. The successful candidate will provide strategic advice to Vineland’s senior management team regarding the suitability and readiness of potential clients, partners and technology licensees. They will also work closely with Vineland’s research teams and licensees throughout the technology transfer process to ensure a seamless handoff of technology.

Key duties and responsibilities:

  • Maintain an intimate knowledge and understanding of the Vineland’s research programs and value proposition
  • Collaborate with Vineland staff to prioritize and structure business initiatives and activities to ensure effective operational implementation
  • Drive top-line revenue generation with a focus on acquiring new accounts, while growing existing clients
  • Lead client prospecting and engagement process, including qualifying, relationship building, needs evaluation, solution development/presentation and closing
  • Manage business relationships with Vineland technology licensees to ensure commercial targets are being achieved and impact maximized
  • Actively participate in regular pipeline reviews, ensuring all Client Relationship Management (CRM) records are up-to-date and critical success factors are identified for key opportunities
  • Stay current with respect to industry trends and market influences that impact the Canadian horticulture industry and corollary sectors
  • Gather and analyze business intelligence, metrics and trends to determine market opportunities and strategies


  • Undergraduate degree, or equivalent, in business, science, agriculture or engineering
  • More than five years’ experience working in a business, marketing or B2B technical sales role
  • Demonstrated success in bringing technology to market by formulating business development plans and strategies to create high-impact value
  • Business acumen and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build strong relationships locally, nationally and internationally
  • Successful experience working in multidisciplinary teams
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills coupled with strong presentation skills
  • Strong organizational skills, multi-tasking and ability to meet deadlines
  • Travel up to 50% of the time

  • Ability to merge science/engineering with business and leverage networks to advance relationships with government and/or industry partners
  • Substantial knowledge of the horticulture and Canadian innovation system
  • Advanced knowledge of key client management strategies
  • Advanced knowledge of effective communication, marketing and outreach
  • Strategies specific to attracting and retaining key partners, clients and collaborators
  • Strong negotiation skills for development of partnerships and multi-client collaborations
  • Demonstrated ability to develop program business strategies and implementation plans
  • Experience working in technology transfer and/or licensing
