Senior Business Development Advisor

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (Vineland) is recruiting for a Senior Business Development Advisor to work in an industry-driven research environment.  Vineland is a world-class research centre dedicated to horticultural science and innovation. Located in Canada’s Niagara Region, on the traditional territory of Anishinaabeg, Ojibway/Chippewa and Haudenosaunee peoples, this territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Business and Client Development team is highly integrated in the organization’s research programs, providing support in the areas of business development, contracts, intellectual property management and client relationships.

The Senior Business Development Advisor identifies and builds new business opportunities to maximise the full breadth of Vineland’s technical services and research capabilities to the sector.  This position provides business leadership and collaborates with Vineland’s research program leaders and teams to direct and enhance their capacity to attract and retain clients and collaborators. The position is also accountable for managing client relationships and securing revenue at a level appropriate to support Vineland’s core research programs.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Maintain an intimate knowledge and understanding of Vineland’s research programs and value proposition
  • Collaborate with Vineland staff to prioritize and structure business initiatives and activities to ensure effective operational implementation
  • Drive top-line revenue generation with a focus on acquiring new accounts, while growing existing clients
  • Actively participate in regular pipeline reviews, ensuring all Client Relationship Management (CRM) records are up-to-date and critical success factors are identified for key opportunities
  • Seek out and develop new partnerships with companies interested in bringing Vineland technologies to market
  • Remain current with respect to industry trends and market influences that impact the Canadian horticulture industry and corollary sectors
  • Gather and analyze business intelligence, metrics and trends to determine market opportunities and strategies

Qualifications

  • Graduate degree or equivalent in business, science, agriculture or engineering
  • Five years’ experience working in a business development role
  • Demonstrated success in research and development by formulating business development plans and strategies to create high-impact value
  • Significant experience working in multidisciplinary teams
  • Business acumen and interpersonal skills with a proven ability to build strong relationships locally, nationally and internationally
  • Ability to merge science/engineering with business and leverage networks to advance relationships with government and/or industry partners
  • Substantial knowledge of the horticulture and Canadian innovation system
  • Advanced knowledge of key client management strategies
  • Advanced knowledge of effective communication, marketing and outreach strategies including strategies specific to attracting and retaining key partners, clients and collaborators
  • Ability to travel up to 50% of the time
