Senior Research Technician, Biochemistry

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (Vineland) is recruiting for a Senior Research Technician, Biochemistry to work in an industry-driven research environment.  Vineland is a world-class research centre dedicated to horticultural science and innovation. Duties & Responsibilities

This position is responsible for laboratory work required to fulfill the Biochemistry group’s role in Vineland research projects across multiple programs. Under the direction of the Research Scientist, Biochemistry, the role’s primary focus will involve preparing and analyzing plant metabolite extracts using mass spectrometry-based metabolomics.

  • Handle and prepare samples for mass spectrometry-based metabolite profiling and other biochemical assays
  • Operate and perform routine maintenance on UPLC-MS and GC-MS systems
  • Develop and optimize new analytical methods to benefit horticulture
  • Keep accurate hard copy and electronic laboratory records of methods, data and results
  • Manage laboratory inventory and order supplies
  • Maintain a safe and clean laboratory workspace
  • Contribute to publications of research in scientific journals and industry trade magazines
  • Represent Vineland in presentations and other interactions with stakeholders
  • Some greenhouse and field work will be required


  • MSc in biochemistry, chemistry, biology or related discipline
  • Minimum of five years related experience in a research and development or quality control environment
  • Hands-on experience operating and maintaining gas and/or liquid chromatography system(s) coupled to mass spectrometer(s)
  • Demonstrated experience of independent laboratory work
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint)
  • A passion for research projects at the interface of chemistry and biology
  • Familiarity with Waters Masslynx software and/or Bruker MS Workstation is preferred
  • Demonstrated experience with plant sciences/agricultural research
  • Ability to work independently with the capability of creating extended work plans in consultation with the Research Scientist
  • Project management skills is preferred
