Technical Assistant, Plant Breeding – Apple (Fall Student)

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (Vineland) is recruiting for a Technical Assistant, Plant Breeding (Apple) to work in an industry-driven research environment.  Vineland is a world-class research centre dedicated to horticultural science and innovation. Duties & Responsibilities

Reporting to the Research Scientist, Plant Breeding the Technical Assistant is primarily responsible for assisting in the research integral to plant breeding. This position will perform various duties that may include, but are not limited to, manual pollinations, seed sowing, seedling maintenance, orchard maintenance, analytical analysis of fruit, harvesting and evaluation of test fruit.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Participates in all aspects of plant breeding as needed
  • Assists with research activities in the laboratory, farm and greenhouse
  • Collects data and perform analysis
  • Actively participates in team meetings
  • Follows protocols and procedures
  • Engages with members of the department and others at Vineland
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies

Qualifications

  • Minimum of one year of post-secondary education in related discipline
  • Basic knowledge of plant breeding and/or laboratory experience
  • Experience working on a farm or in a greenhouse is desirable
  • Experience with analytical testing of fruit is desirable (eg. Brix, titratable acidity, spectral imaging, etc.)
  • Ability to work both independently as well as in a team environment
  • Excellent organizational and time-management skills
  • Ability to multi-task and perform repetitive tasks with a high degree of accuracy
  • Collaborative and team-oriented mindset
  • Basic principles and practices of record keeping; excellent note-taking skills is essential
  • Awareness of safety standards and procedures
  • Attention to detail and ability to follow standard protocols
  • Effective communication skills
  • Position requires standing, bending, lifting/twisting and is physically demanding
  • Candidate will need to work in potentially hot or cold conditions
