Technical Assistant – Research & Development

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (Vineland) is recruiting for a Technical Assistant, Research & Development to work in an industry-driven research environment. The term of appointment for this contract position is starting September 7, 2021 for eight weeks with a possibility of an eight week extension.

Duties & Responsibilities

To assist full-time staff with research activities primarily related to apple breeding. The Technical Assistant will work primarily at our research farm, evaluating fruit maturity, harvesting fruit and extracting seeds and moving crates of apples into and out of storage.

If time permits, the Technical Assistant may assist in the laboratory performing analytical testing of apples. This may include titratable acidity, texture measurements, Brix, differential absorbance measurements and spectral imaging.

The Technical Assistant will work independently as well as on a team to ensure all tasks are completed in a timely manner with a high degree of accuracy. Being able to perform repetitive tasks with a high level of concentration is essential. Attention to detail is critical in this position.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Assist on research farm as needed (apple harvest, apple budding, moving apple bins into storage, etc)
  • Perform analytical tests on apples (including spectral imaging, titratable acidity, texture measurements, Brix, etc)
  • Data collection and sample identity preservation. Data entry into breeding software.
  • Process, analyze and summarize data
  • Properly setup, operate and run all of the laboratory equipment
  • Maintain a clean, orderly and safe work place
  • Conduct all activities and interactions in a respectful, positive and professional
    manner
  • Perform all activities in a manner that is consistent with commitment to the health, safety and wellness of all staff
  • Perform other designated tasks as assigned
  • Adhere to all Vineland policies related to workplace safety and record-keeping

Qualifications

  • At least three years of university or college in a related field. Completed diploma or degree preferred.
  • Candidate must be between 15 and 30 years of age and eligible to work in Canada.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Basic knowledge of plant breeding
  • Experience working in a laboratory
  • Experience working in a greenhouse or field
  • Experience with analytical testing of fruit is preferred
  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Ability to lift heavy objects (40 pounds)
  • Strong teamwork attitude and dependability is critical
  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks with high level of concentration
  • Strong communication skills
  • Experience working with plants would be considered an asset
  • Self-motivated with strong organizational skills
