Technical Assistants – Environmental Horticulture Research & Development (2 positions)

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (Vineland) is recruiting for two Technical Assistants, Environmental Horticulture Research & Development to work in an industry-driven research environment. The term of appointment for these two contract positions is from September 2021 to August 31, 2022.

Duties & Responsibilities

To assist in the delivery of contracts for Platform Genetics Inc. and with occasional support for internal Vineland research projects.

The Technical Assistant will work independently as well as on a team to ensure all tasks are completed in a timely manner with a high degree of accuracy.  Being able to perform repetitive tasks with a high level of concentration is essential.  Attention to detail is critical in this position.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Physical work in our field and greenhouse facilities assisting with plant care and trait experiments
  • Seed new plant material, transplant raising, as well as assist with fertigation, pruning, clipping, suckering, harvesting, seeding, organization and storage
  • Position requires long hours of standing, bending, lifting/twisting and is physically demanding. Candidate will need to work in potentially hot conditions and be able to do repetitive physical tasks without issue.
  • Working safely in the greenhouse is absolutely required. This involves adhering to standard operating procedures for plant maintenance techniques, wearing the appropriate equipment for each task and frequently asking for direction as needed.
  • Assistant will need to work as part of the team and be willing to take direction and suggestions
  • Maintain a clean, orderly and safe work place
  • Conduct all activities and interactions in a respectful, positive and professional manner
  • Perform all activities in a manner that is consistent with commitment to the health, safety and wellness of all staff
  • Perform other designated tasks as assigned
  • Adhere to all Vineland policies related to workplace safety and record-keeping

Qualifications

  • Post-secondary education (BSc or diploma) in plant or horticultural sciences
  • Valid Ontario driver’s licence
  • WHMIS, First Aid/CPR certification

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS & ABILITIES:

  • Minimum of one year of greenhouse or field experience and be familiar with many aspects of plant management
  • Ability to grow, transplant, prune and harvest vegetables
  • Experience taking notes on phenotypes of plants
  • Experience measuring, collecting and managing large dataset, including meticulous note taking
  • Ability to identify common plant pests (i.e. aphids, thrips, mites) or plant nutrient deficiencies
  • Experience working with lifts and jacks or at heights is an asset
