Vice President, Operations

Vineland Research and Innovation Centre (Vineland) is recruiting for a Vice President, Operations to work in an industry-driven research environment.  Vineland is a world-class research centre dedicated to horticultural science and innovation. Located in Canada’s Niagara Region, on the traditional territory of Anishinaabeg, Ojibway/Chippewa and Haudenosaunee peoples, this territory is covered by the Upper Canada Treaties.

Duties & Responsibilities

Reporting to the CEO, the Vice President, Operations provides leadership to a multi-disciplinary team responsible for operations, facilities (buildings, greenhouses and farms), Human Resources and health and safety. The Vice President has a major responsibility assisting the CEO in achieving its mission, vision and values.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

As member of the Senior Management Team you will support the development, implementation and evaluation of organizational strategy, risk management and decision-making.

In your leadership role as Vice President, you will:

  • Lead and manage the Operations team by creating a positive work environment and culture
  • Create mechanisms to improve teamwork and collaboration between department staff and enhance the performance of cross-functional groups
  • Collaborate in the financial management of the organization through sound strategic and financial planning, while managing and administering the annual operating budget for the Operations team
  • Provide overall responsibility for Vineland’s integrated systems and information technology infrastructure by developing and implementing short- and long-term technology plans that meet standards for integrity and security
  • Secure and maintain appropriate insurance for all assets and operations, including professional insurance for Vineland and Board members
  • Provide oversight on the development and execution of comprehensive building, greenhouse and farm operations plans, including capital expansion projects
  • Establish and oversee organization-wide human resources practices, programs, services, policies and processes that support the strategic direction of Vineland
  • Lead and manage programs that ensure employee health, safety and the protection of the environment; ensuring compliance to health, safety and environmental laws

Qualifications

You are a collaborative leader with demonstrated success driving transformative change management through strategic planning and leadership. You will provide oversight in the areas of operations, facilities and human resources and have a:

  • Post-graduate degree (i.e. MBA) and a minimum of 10 years of executive experience (preferably in the not-for-profit and/or research sector). An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
  • Minimum of five years of senior manager experience in health, safety and environment leadership
  • Demonstrated leadership experience with core values centered on a participative communication style with a high degree of transparency and leading by example through walking around and communicating with all levels of the organization effectively
  • Demonstrated experience with a commitment to building leadership capacity
  • Evidence of well-developed strategic thinking and project management skills in a deadline-driven environment where multi-tasking and prioritizing are constantly required
  • Excellent communication skills (written, oral and interpersonal) combined with outstanding human relations, team building and organizational skills
  • Advanced skills and experience in project management; maintain and support business processes; manage within financial constraints, including budget control, data integrity and meeting reporting requirements.
