What we’re looking for…

Reporting to the Director, Plant Responses and the Environment, the Senior Research Technician will coordinate and implement trials related to urban forestry projects for the Plant Responses and environment program.  This role will coordinate, plan, monitor project timelines, assist with monitoring project budgets, and coordinate directly with Vineland research collaborators.  The Senior Research Technician will work closely with other scientific and technical staff at Vineland, as well as external partners, to enable a multidisciplinary approach to research and project delivery.

Duties & Responsibilities

What you’ll do…

  • With the guidance of the Director, execute projects related to urban forestry challenges including tree nursery projects.
  • Coordinate the Greening the Landscape Research Consortium:
    • Implement research activities, plan and assign tasks to junior technical staff to complete projects on time and on budget.
    • Facilitate Consortium operations to ensure high quality outcomes as it relates to program operational needs.
    • Contribute toward the development of program materials, including standard operating procedures (i.e. Consortium Operating Manual) and best practices.
    • Support the development and implementation of new collaboration methods and approaches designed to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of Consortium operations.
    • Coordinate the organization, management and integration of data and information related to the Consortium program.
    • Instrumental in knowledge transfer of Consortium activities and research results, including the coordination of on-line and in-person events, writing of articles for trade journals, and upkeep of shared files/folders with Consortium members.
  • Responsible for maintaining structure and organization of project management processes as required by the Director.
  • Work together with the Director and PRE scientists to:
    • Provide support with proposal work plan and budget development for incoming projects.
    • Provide support with optimization and adoption of new services/techniques.
    • Implement additional urban forestry research projects which may be related to improving current standards and practices in the industry for topics as varied as green roofs, tree nursery production, vertical forests, food forests, and miniforests.

Qualifications

What we need from you…

  • BSc in Forestry, Environmental Science, Ecology or similar degree
  • Minimum of 2-3 years of professional experience in research
  • A Master’s Degree (M.Sc., M.A., M.S. or equivalent) is considered an

Knowledge and Skills

  • Excellent project management skills, with a passion for organizing and tracking research activities.
  • Experience in urban forestry, with a good understanding of tree species and physiology.
  • Strong familiarity with different sectors of the urban tree value chain, particularly tree nursery functions.
  • Excellent organizational skills and ability to function effectively under time constraints.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills that facilitate clear, confident interactions and knowledge exchange with technical and non-technical teams.
  • Experience implementing multiple on-going projects at the same time.
