Duties & Responsibilities

What we’re looking for…

Reporting to the Director, Plant Responses and the Environment, the Research Scientist, Plant Production will conduct high quality scientific research addressing greenhouse/CEA production challenges on various crops to advance Vineland’s Innovation Goals.

 What you’ll do…

  • Prepare and execute experiments with cross-functional teams that support the goals of Vineland’s programs
  • Work collaboratively on multi-disciplinary teams that may include other researchers, business development, marketing staff, clients and industry stakeholders
  • Secure external funds from granting agencies and industry partners to support research activities
  • Manage the day‐to‐day activities associated with numerous greenhouse/CEA production trials, including monitoring and documenting progress, managing and interpreting data on berries, cucumbers, leafy greens, tomatoes, among others
  • Work Collaboratively with Vineland’s Farm and Greenhouse teams on implementation of plant production practices
  • Track and manage project progress and budgets using software tools
  • Prepare agronomic and financial reports to support commercialization of new crops
  • Building upon your strong network of CEA industry contacts, communicate research findings and other technical developments to stakeholders and the wider scientific community
  • Contribute to publications of research in scientific journals and industry trade magazines
  • Lead, train and manage program staff, co-op and graduate. students.

Qualifications

What we need from you…

Qualifications
  • Post-secondary degree (B.Sc. or Sc.) in Horticulture, Plant Biology, Plant Sciences, or Plant Physiology
  • PhD in Horticulture, Plant Biology, Plant Sciences, or Plant Physiology preferred
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of research experience in areas of plant science and/or biological science, or environmental horticulture science
  • 4+ years interacting with cross-functional teams.
 Knowledge and Skills
  • Experience managing and overseeing multiple on-going initiatives simultaneously
  • Experience growing various greenhouse/CEA crops (required)
  • Strong communication skills that facilitate clear, confident interactions and knowledge exchange with technical and non-technical teams
  • Preferred experience with berries (strawberries and long-cane raspberries)
  • Experience doing research to support the commercialization of products
  • Working knowledge of budgeting and financial management
  • Demonstrated ability to manage a small team.
