Duties & Responsibilities

What we’re looking for…

The Research Technician will be assigned to and provide support with the execution of field, greenhouse and lab activities for various internal and contract projects administered by the Program Groups with Research & Development (R&D).  This opportunity will primarily support the Plant Responses & the Environment Program.

What you’ll do…

  • Work closely with applicable R&D staff; greenhouse and field managers; lab staff to carry out daily research tasks, review projects, experimental design and review results.
  • Conduct data collection and maintain detailed records of
  • Keep up to date on methods for plant health assessments and undergo training for specific methodology where required.
  • Provide support with the execution of indoor vegetable and floriculture trials.
  • Assist in coordinating and monitoring of greenhouse experiments, including sampling plants, measuring plant and fruit characteristics, as well as the growing media used in various trials.
  • Plant production work can include: seeding new plant material, transplant raising, as well as assisting with fertigation, pruning, clipping, suckering, harvesting, seed organization and storage.
  • Some minor support for both lab and field trials may be required included: soil grinding, sieving, weighing, and additional support subject to appropriate training, soil sampling, monitoring field research trials, transplanting, weeding, scouting, and mowing.

Qualifications

What we need from you…

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate Degree or Diploma in plant or horticultural sciences, greenhouse technician, agriculture or equivalent.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including report writing, and clear communication of research findings to lay audiences.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of greenhouse or tree nursery experience and be familiar with many aspects of plant physiology and identification.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of greenhouse hydroponics experience and be familiar with many aspects of plant
  • One (1) year experience working in the field or greenhouse in support of scientific research.
  • Valid Ontario Driver’s License

 

Knowledge and Skills

  • Past experience in data management and organization of larger data sets
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills including report writing, and clear communication of research findings to lay audiences.
  • Greenhouse experience – able to grow, transplant, prune and harvest plant materials and/or
  • Field experience – experience performing field trials and urban forestry research is an asset.
  • Data collection – experience taking notes on plants and managing large datasets in an organized
